I broke my speedometer

  • I broke my speedometer

    My speedometer cable had starting making a squeaking noise so I decided to lube it. I unscrewed the cable from the speedometer and pulled it down so I could get some oil in there. Oiled it up, but when I went to reinstall it, it was like the internal cable was too long. I couldn't push it back into the cable[}]

    So, I took the car for a drive to make sure the cable was okay and now it doesn't turn[}]. Did it pull loose from the drive gear in the transmission?

    yep, you probably did pull the cable from the drive gear in the transmission... I do it all the time. Try to turn and push on the cable behind the speedometer until it reseats. Otherwise you may have to disconnect at the transmission and pull the cable out a bit.

      What kind of lube did you use?
      Most speedo cables get lubed with a graphite based lube.
      A wet lube may cause sticking later on, especially in colder weather.

        It was lock oil with graphite.

          That should have been OK, although to do it better, I would have removed the cable and hand-jobbed some graphite powder over it's length. You might be able to wiggle the cable back into it's drive slot in the trans gear with some judicious twisting while pushing. If not, you'll have to pull the housing and gear out at the tranny end (not really hard to do) and physically re-insert the cable end into the gear and then reinstall this in the tranny.[:I]

          One other point to add is, lubing the speedo itself.[8D] I just happened to have a '66 Speedo out in the garage so I got and took a photo of the oiling point that's provided for this purpose.

          Of course, '63 thru '66 Speedos are virtually the same and all other postwar Studes I've been into have had a similar oiling spot. That's not to say that ALL of them have this - just the ones I've been intimate with.

          I might add that this oiling point is oriented towards the top. It would be handy to have one of those plastic oiler bottles with the extendable, tube/spout that let's you get to out or the way places from as much as a foot away.
          Hardware stores that have swamp cooler supplies are a likely place to find one of these handy oilers. I much prefer this item to the standard 3in1 brand oiler. 3in1 tried to one-up this product awhile back but the stupid shut-off tip they added only causes frustration!

            You know, I could FEEL that little hole up there, but sure couldn't see it and couldn't even imagine how you could get anything up in there to oil it. I'll have to check those oilers out.

              That oiling hole is there even on my 55 truck. Since the last time I drove the truck, I have oiled the hole (because I used to see a really bad jitter around 60 mph and up). The truck won't be running for a while, but at least I was able to test whether the jitter can now be coming from the speedometer unit itself - here's how:

              Since I have removed the whole instrument panel (for painting), I hooked up an electric drill and a square drive bit to the drive cable receptacle, which is to substitute for the speedometer cable in motion. A battery powered drill could only get the speedo up to 35 mph, so I connected a wired electric drill and tried again. It was jitter-free all the way up to the max speed on the speedometer.

              So, either:

              1) Mr. Biggs' suggestion of oiling that spot (which I read in his post a month or so ago) did the trick, or
              2) The jittering will return when I finally drive the truck again, pointing to a cable that needs a better lube than I gave it recently.

                She's fixed now. I had to undo the cable/gear from transmission end, the push the cable back into place. Easy fix.

                I just don't understand why pushing on the cable with the gear still IN the transmission didn't work. I twisted and pushed on the cable, but once I pulled the drive gear out, it fell right in place[}]
