On the back of the left-hand axle tube - about 3 inches inboard of the left spring perch (and roughly on a level with the top edge of that perch) is a hole that's maybe 1/16th of an inch. Probably covered with grunge.

    Miscreant at large.

Actually on a '55 there are also two small vent holes on top of the outer bearings just inboard of the backing plates. Those need to be cleaned off prior to greasing the wheel bearings (that's what those two plugs are for, BTW) otherwise if the holes are packed tight with gunk instead of the grease coming out the vents when the bearings are full you can instead force grease past the felt seals and onto your brakes

Nate, aren't those two holes you speak of effectively blocked by the bearing race?[?]

Not on my '55 they aren't; when I pump the bearings full of grease I can tell when they're done because I get a little grease worm coming out of the vent hole.

Thanks Nate for your info. I found the 2 vents you spoke of but they only vent the bearing area. The 2 inner seals block the deffentrial from being vented. I'll look for the hole Mr biggs mentioned. Thanks should also go to Mr Biggs.
