Jeff is right on. Please stay away for using steel wool on chrome. Some of the finer rubbing compounds are okay. If something is etched into the chrome you probably won't be able to get all of it out without going thru the plating.

Water marks should come out with a mild abrasive solution.
    Want cheap first?
    Try toothpaste...
Then try corn starch (yeah, from the kitchen)
Rubbing compound could actually be too rough and leave scratches, or dull the surface shine.
All polishing should be done with a soft cloth.
NO wire wheels or wire brushes.
Eastwood company makes a nice polishing kit.
A couple of good articles to read are at:

    Hope the info helps.

(Oh, by the way.... You will never get those vertical lines out of the butternife side pieces, unless you have a pro stainless guy spend a lot of hours on them. The marks are from the production dies)

what is the best and (easiest) way to polish the bright work on my 55 speedster? It shines ok but has what looks like water marks that will not come off, it looks like they are etched into the steel.

I would try 0000 steel wool, maybe with a little dish detergent. It should get rid of your spots. For a super shine, jeweler's rouge and a polishing wheel.
