  • big 6 water pump

I am needing a new water pump for my '39 comander 5A.
The pump is the one with the greaser on the side, not on the front.
Had a rebuilt one,not very good.

    Mike,

You're not going to find a "New" one. And even if you did, you wouldn't want to use it. There probably hasn't been any NEW Big 6 water pumps made since the last of the Big 6s was produced in 1960.

I would check with Don Gay (309) 443-5217 in Illinois or Dave Thibeault (978) 897-3158 in Massechusets
Also Lionel Stone advertises rebuild service for 1929-1934 (818)990-8916 in California
        All advertise in ASC Review.

I know this is a SDC forum, not Antique Studebaker Club but, if you own pre-war Stude you should join ASC.

          Mike,

I've not heard of any one source that has better rebuilt pumps than another. Certainly there's not enough comparison of notes, even here in the US to bea ble to cull out who might be a good source or bad source of such a thing. Water pumps are pretty basic in function but carelessness during overhaul or letting rebuild parts (bearings and seals) sit on a shelf forever and a day could be factors a parts vendor has no control over. I don't know of any vendors that would rebuild their own core water pumps. I'm sure they enlist the talents of a rebuild shop to do this, as they would with brake shoes or fuel pumps.
I'd say it was up to you to query a vendor about the track record of their overhauled units and how "fresh" their stock of such is.
