Dual carb setup for Champion six

  • Dual carb setup for Champion six

    I'm considering doing a performance modification to my 185 cu. in. six. Cathcart sells an Offenhauser dual carb setup for $775 (w/ exchange) that includes 2 rebuilt carburetors, connected with linkage and fuel lines. He says this could add 20% to the horsepower.

    But there are less expensive options, if I'm willing to round up the components and do it myself. At the risk of alerting other potential bidders, I'm asking for opinions on this older setup that has come up on eBay:

    I know there's a risk in sending carbs to be "professionally rebuilt", but these two may need more help than I can provide with rebuilding kits. Let's assume it will cost $400 to rebuild them both, and another $75 for linkage kit and fuel line components to join the two. I guess that leaves only $300 for a max bid before it's pointless to go this route over Cathcart's setup. But if I'm the only bidder at $100, what do you think?

    If nothing else, I've alerted you to view a cool looking "oldie" dual carb intake, by this Edmunds company.

    There was quite a bit of hop up stuff built for the Champ six...
    That Edmunds manifold is neat... Even has water heat capability...
    You'll have to run headers, or get a split exhaust setup..

    Carbs will always be the pricey part...
    "If" you choose to rebuild yours, you'll spend decent sized bucks...
    But there are other options too... I bought an ace carb brand new for a Ccab for $50 not too long ago... Way better use of cash than rebuilding what I had....

    Even if all you do is polish the manifold and strip and clean the carbs and toss a couple of rebuild kits, you can make money on it if you buy it right and do good work...

    Or.... You can be like me and buy the things and then have trouble parting with them...[]

        Well, there are two or three $100 ace carbs on Ebay right now..
        I bought mine at an SDC state meet swap meet early on a Saturday morning.... Didn;t hesitate a bit
        I'm looking for deals decent Stromberg WW's right now...
        I need about 10 of them [:0]
        Maybe we can look out for each other and save a few bucks...

          Personally I would rather do this kind of work myself, I just love to work on my car. I've been looking at this set up for awhile now.http://www.offyparts.com/product_inf...555033024a2705
          All that is requiered is buying a couple of old stock carbs and a rebuild. Then just put it together and set it.

            Sure, you can do this work yourself, and it is ever so satisfying!
            That is a nice looking manifold...

            Couple of things you will need to do this 'right'...
            Shop around for a 'Uni-Syn' carb synchronizer.
            They are not too expensive and will help you get the carbs 'matched' as far as idle goes.

            Some carb guys will remove the power valve and accellerator pump link on the second carb and run this just like a secondary set of butterflies on a 4bbl carb. The dual deuce setups I have played with did not need this to be done... I think the ace carbs could be set up this way. Trial and error will tell you that. If you build your linkage you may want to partially open the first cab and then open the second carb to prevent 'lag;. After seeing the linkages some have built, it may be easier to just buy something from Charlie Price's place... http://www.vintagespeed.com/

              Thanks for the Uni-Syn link. I was hesitant at first to attempt this, but then I remembered that my first car was a Corvair, and that I had bought a Uni-Syn to balance the carbs. They always worked fine.

              Now, Deep'nHock, you will have to enlighten me on what exactly an "Ace carb" is. I don't know if Ace is shorthand for some terminology that I should be aware of. Is it a brand, or what?

              Also, thanks for the linkage possibilities. It looks like the Offy comes with a linkage kit. I'll have to call them and find out which carburetors this works best with.
