  • wheels for Avanti

I'm looking at the torque thrust D wheels for my Avanti but don't know how wide a rim I can use. I'm thinking I can use 7" and that my bolt pattern is 4.5". Can I get wider than that without hurting the fenders or hitting the suspension? How about a taller than stock rim? What looks good. I've got the rotating hubcap thing and don't like hubcaps anyway

7" is pushing it, I know that you can fit them on a C-K but it's tight. I would say stick with a 6" rim and a little bit of offset if you can (1/4 to 1/2") and you *should* be OK.

Maybe someone can comment about fitting 7" wide wheels to an Avanti, I haven't tried it so I can't give you a definite answer either way.

I haven't put the TQ-Thrust D's on my Avanti but I have put a number of different steel wheels on.The 7" steel rims made by Pioneer and Keystone Custom mags. will fit with a 4 3/4" back space but on a 235X60X15 they will rub on a full lock turn either way at the front of the upper a arm where the zerk fitting hangs out. I solved that by putting a 1/4x28 plug in the hole and putting the zerk fitting in when I grease it.The TQ-T is thicker than the steel rim so I would say no more than 4 1/2" back space with it.But then watch the fenders.

i am not too sure how much the rearend on an avanti differs from a lark but i fit a 9" wide 17" tall wheel on the back of my lark with plenty room. the front wouldn't take more the 6 or 7.

I have a set of 15x7 Torq-Thrust-D's (4 1/2" backspacing) and they Rub on the front of my LARK wagon (with stock suspension). I am going to go with a 15x6.

                That's a tall tire I run 235/60/15.

Hey Alan, that 235\60\15 tire you use. Is it on a 15x6" rim? Or does it need a 7". Thats a size I used on a barracuda I used to have and really liked the looks of it. But I'm afraid to use a 7" rim. Also, is the tire height close enough to factory where the speedo is close to accurate?

I guess I'm wondering that if I use the torque thrust d wheels, I need a 15x6 wheel with a 4 1\2 backspace and a 4 1\2 bolt pattern using the 235\15\60 tires, I should be ok and still have an accurate speedometer.

Charlie, the 6.70's I checked out ran from 27 1/4 to 27 1/2" and the 235/60 R15's were 26 1/4". The rims I run are steel 10 hole chrome 15x7 with a 4 3/4" backspace. but on the rear I run 275/60x15's on the same rim. These are 28" tall. You have to lift the body slightly to get them under the fender and don't take a turn fast with a couple of people in the car unless you want to hear funny rubbing noises and smell rubber being scraped off numerous places.

Alan, do you have a picture of your car you can email me? I'd like to see what your tires and wheels look like. Or any other Avanti with aftermarket wheels and tires that someone has.
                        Thanks Charley

OK Charlie, I will take some pics. Although my car is sitting higher right now because I have a 4.3 Chevy V6 that is only about 300 lbs. in it. And have not played with the springs yet, because when Red Roberts gets around to the bellhousings the Avanti engine is going back in.
What area are you near? If you are around the L.A. area I could help you in your quest.
