  • fuel pump

    MY block is cast in 12/1963 ,it's a V-8 . Now I feal the fuel pump is leaking oil. It's an AC . Can these be found in any particular parts store? Are the diaphrams in these mechanical pumps compatiable with todays fuel? What is the number of a replacement pump?

    NAPA # M2211 Sadly, they seem to leak oil when still fairly new But this isn't because they're incompatible with todays gas. It's just a crappy plunger rod seal that lets the oil by.
    Jeff R. said there's a seal available from Summit that's used to cure the same malady on Chebby V8s. I might just have to buy a half dozen or so.

        Curt - you can contact Summit online at www.summitracing.com , or call (800)230-3030. Sometimes you can find Summit catalogs at the local QuikTrip if you'd like something to read in the little boys room.

          I couldn't find the improved fuel pump stem seal in the catalog. Do you mean the seal for the accelerator pump on the carb?

            No, we're talking about a seal (daiphragm?) to keep engine oil out of the fuel pump's upper area - so that it doesn't throw so much oil on the plunger seal and thus out the vent hole and all over the engine.[}]

                Try the AC4227 or the rebuild kit but the kits are almost as expensive as the rebuilt pump. I checked my Summit Catalog and could not find it.
                But I have bought other things from Summit that were not in the book.

                  I ordered an ORiley = to NAPA M2211 fuel pump. My present pump has every other screw , or every other screw is missing to word it differently. The two castings with the diaphram inbetween have a high number of screws holding the pump together and I think all screws are needed. The pump works but drips oil , what a mess after driving 100 miles. I will get more screws and then reeval the present pump. It would still work as a spare.

                    There are new fuel pumps advertised in the Turning Wheels. These are reputedly copies of the original pumps used in Studebakers. It might be a better fit than whatever one can find at the corner autoparts store.

                      The new pumps are small block MOPARS with a tweaked arm to work on a Studebaker.

                        I just bought a kit for the exact pump under discussion from Phil Harris. It's actually intended for an earlier pump but looks like it will work, with the exception of the filter element (comes with filter element for the "glass bowl" type filter)

                        I should get off my butt and try to rebuild that pump today just so I can say whether it works or not.

                        Additionally, Phil sells new pumps that work fine; I have one on my '55 Commander right now. I had to remove the '63 pump because it was too close to the frame but the new one fits fine. (I guess that means if I ever go to an R-motor I will need to modify the LF engine mount bracket)

                          just thought, shouldn't the pump be a Carter? I thought all of them were...?

                          In any case I have a stock '63 pump and can look at it more closely later today.

                            The M2211 comes in a Carter Federal Mogul box. It does not say Carter on the casting. It looks identical to the pump on the car,AC is stamped on that pump.

                              I do not see why these pumps leak.Does oil come out between the diaphram and casting? Does it come out the hole where the arm is held on by the pin that goes in to the casting, then the pin continues into the arm and then out through the casting?[?][?][?][:I]
