This varies from state to state and most have procedures for titling old and/or low value vehicles, or they don't title them at all if they're more than a certain age. (I used to do a lot of this when I worked for a DMV of a large state many years ago in a past life.) You'll first need to check with your state.

A two minute google search will produce a number of on-line title agencies. My experience with these involved getting a valid registration (and plates) in a non-title state, then using that documentation to apply for a title in your home state. Again, if your state is a title state, they'll have procedures for obtaining titles on vehicles which are validly registered in no-title states. Again in my experience, the touchy parts are the chain of ownership and the value. I know of cases where a bad (or no) chain of ownership was compensated for with a motor vehicle bond (on high value vehicles), which can be expensive. Your experience may vary. In any case, the worst problems I've seen involved people who got heavily (financially) into their projects without having their title ducks in a row first.

Thanks for the info Mark. Thats exactly why i havent done a thing to the couple of cars that i dont have titles to. That would be a nightmare to put a lot of money and time in and find out you can't own for some reason!

Here in Calif., it's actualy a bit easier if a car's set long enough to where it's off their DMV computers. And frankly, it's to some degree, up to the DMV employee you happen to draw by chance when you go to deal with the paperwork.

At least, that's been my experience in our local DMV office.
Here - if you have only a bill of sale (handwritten no less) - that can be enough to get you going so long as you have a official peace officer or a DMV employee verify the serial# (or eng# if that's the case) by observing it first-hand. This is with a car that's been "off the radar" officially so far as the states DMV records show.
If a car that's set for several years is still ON their computers and was not designated as non-operational by the last owner - HO BOY! - there's gonna be some back fees and fines looming!

But in some cases you have to be careful. Some states look at untitled cars as 'abandoned', and they'll want to take possession to auction it to make their money. This is where the reference about the state not liking theives because they don't want competition...

Mr Biggs I'm a little east from you as the route 66 flies in Oklahoma!I saw a post by you one time that said you are starting to collect Studebaker dealer plates. I've got two or three i'd like to give you as a gift. One of them is from a California dealer. I'll have to get your address maybe thru email. As for my mental state i suffer from brandxaphobia

and have a severe condition called Studeitis!

Sad to say, I may not be able to help you. I have never dealt with cars without titles. However, I do know there is a provision for bills of sale. I also know that penelties can be avoided for cars that have been off the road for some time, if one keeps receipts for MECHANICAL work done. (Things that keep a car from running, not cosmetic things.)

The best advice I can give you is to call David Sasser at (405)547-2184. He is the local tag agent in Perkins, OK. He's the best to deal with when it comes to such issues, if there is a legal way around the hoop-jumping, he will help you through the maze... if there is not, he'll tell you what hoops you need to jump through. Unlike DPS or most other tag agents, he works with you. Of course, common courtesy would suggest that you do your intial business with him, if he spends time helping you. [:0] Most likely, if you are dealing with a non titled car, or one that has been unlicensed for some time, you will be going to OKC to the DPS anyway, and I would avoid that like the plague!

Sorry I can't give you better information, but police officers study laws and ordinances involving cars on the streets... they are either legally there, or they are not.

Guys like Dave S. deal with issues involved with getting them legal. Good luck!
