  • Transmission # translation

My automatic traney # has been polished away, I see what looks like: WG DIV?????.....A satmped # 90599 and on the bottom of the plate in paint it looks like : MON????.... This is a 1955 President, with wrap around windshield if that information helps.

My question is , WHO made the traney?

The transmission made by the Detroit Gear Division of Borg-Warner, to a design developed with Studebaker, is what SHOULD be in your 1955 President. "WG" is Warner Gear Division of Borg-Warner. This is confusing me. It has been years since I have looked at one of those ID plates (I just look at the transmission). A 1955 President should have a Detroit Gear DG250. The Warner Gear, to me, refers to the transmission (Ford type) that was introduced in Studebakers in 1956. I don't have a way to ID by that number that you provide. Perhaps someone else does. Your transmission may have been changed from original. You need to have someone that knows Studebaker transmissions take a look at yours. An alternative would be to get pictures of the two types of transmissions and compare the pictures with what is in your car. Where are you located? A DG250 starts out in first gear.

Curt, If this transmission is behind the engine that you mention in another question, it is likely not the original transmission. The engine is a mid-1962 to 1964 and it is in a 1955 car. You may have the car's original DG250 or the Flightomatic that came with the engine. You have to look at the transmission to determine what your car now has. Either get a knowledgable person or good pictures to do this.

I am in Seminole,OK. Yes , this is behind the engine I mentioned in the other post. So .I have a 62 - 64, V8 engine in a 1955 President. Most likely the WG DIV... is Warner Gear and I have the newer traney as well. If I have the WG traney then I check the fluid hot in low. Does that sound correct?

I think it is checked in 'D' if it is a later type of traney, not 'L'[?][?]

Correct Curt, the later transmission, the "Flightomatic" is checked in "D". Goes with out saying, with parking brake applied, wheels chocked and a helper would help.

Curt: There should be an aluminum tag fixed to your tranny with 2 rivets/screws...I think it's on the driver's side, and somewhat visible from under the car. If your lucky, with a little rubbing away by a rag, you'll see the original color(white, green, orange)background. Most likely, you'll see the number stamped on the tag, like AS-XXXXX, or something similar....It may take a little mirror positioned by hand, but it should be there.....Tell us what you got...

That stamped # on the traney tag is : 90599 . The painted part of the tag is mostly bare metal.

On Flight-o-matics, the actual COLOR the ID tag was done in (ie: White, Blue, Copper, etc..) denotes the particular variant (model of Flight-o-matic). Sadly, while the trannies DID have the (for example) "AS-25" (or whatever variant it happened to be)on them when new, said designator was done in the PAINT that the tag was done in. This paint has NOT held up well thru the years[V]. Consequently (and I've got a bunch of trannies like this laying out back!), the only thing left to read is the tranny's SERIAL number which WAS stamped into that once-painted tag. And said stamped serial number does NOT include the model number (again, ie: AS-17, AS-25 or whatever) - so if ALL you can see is the stamped number on your tag, it does not give a clue as to what model of Flight-o-matic you're looking at. Each variant of FOM had it's own serial number run, so the given serial number is not a clue as to what model trans you have.[}]
As I said - if there's discernible color left to the paint that the tag was done in, there's a chance you can tell which model of Flight-o-matic you have. Without that, maybe an expert in the field of FOMs could detect (from internal details) what particular trans it is. And there were a number of different variants besides just early and late - V8 or 6cylinder FOMs used by Studebaker![:0] The 56-7 FOMs have the fixed yoke at the rear of the tranny (this to work with the 2-piece driveshaft arrangement for those 2 years). The later trannies had a splined tailshaft to accomodate the slip yoke of the single-piece driveshaft that was used from 58-on.
"Powershift" FOMs have a different arrangement of their throttle pressure lever, truck FOMs use a vacuum modulator instead of a throttle pressure lever and 65-66 FOMs have a cable to transmit throttle pressure. These are readily discernible details that will help to identify SOME of the many variants of FOM used. Not ALL.
And none of what I've said here has ANY relevance to the DG trannies used in 55 & earlier cars. (Yes Gary, in some '56 Champions and trucks too[)])

                    Miscreant at large.
