  • Rear End ID

    After spending about 20 minutes just cleaning the grease off the rear end ID tag, I found these numbers;

    43-14
    3.07

    Now I know the 3.07 is the gear ratio, but what does the 43-14 indicate? Thanks!

    well the 43 is one set of teeth in the gears and the 14 is another. if there was no tage and you opened up the rear end, counted the teeth thats the numbers you would have. then divide the larger number by the smaller number and you have your gear ratio.

      Thanks Cosmo ! As it appears that the '64 models used both the 27 and 44 rear ends, how does one tell the difference? Can it be assumed that the V-8 cars (this had a 289 2-V)all came with 44's?

        On the Dana rears, The gear ratio tag is held down by a bolt, and it's usually on the left side.

        There is a cast model number, usually on the lower right.

        (this is as you are lookin at the rear of the car)

          As Paul says - there's a simple 27 or 44 cast into the case of the axle. [^]

            Thanks guys! I'll get back out there and scrape more grease off the rear end and take another look.

              Mine only says 41/9..... 4.56 ?

                That's what it says on the TAG. And yes, 4.56 was a common ratio behind a 3-spd O/D tranny.
