  • 1962 Lark Differential Locked Up

    I was driving the car when the rear wheels suddenly locked up. I towed it home and found that it was not the brakes; the wheels spinned freely. I pulled the rear end cover off and saw that the planetaries moved but not the ring and pinion. Is there any way to fix it? Do I have to get a new rear end? How would I find one? Is there anything that would replace it?
    Any advice is much appreciated!

    This may be a really long shot, but I know of one occurrance where one of the ring gear bolts fell out, and found its way somehow between the ring and pinion, and locked the r/a up solid. Bolt was removed, a new bolt installed (old one was slightly chewed up<G&gt and the car kept going!

    I personally had a 3.07 TT rear axle out of a '63 Super Lark Cruiser that I was installing in my R1 Hawk for the trip to the '93 (I think) SDC National in Dearborn. I was cleaning the r/a in preparation for painting it, and heard something rattling around inside. I ended up fishing about 10 pieces of metal out, and finally figured out at one time they were the r/a cover lube plug!! Inspection of the ring and pinion showed no visible damage believe it or not, so the r/a was installed and has given no problem. TRUE STORY!!

    You may not be so lucky.....possibly a bearing came apart and caused the ring/pinion to lock up??

      Are you sure the rear end is broken?

      With the driveshaft installed and both wheels off the ground, if you turn one wheel, just the spider gears will turn and the ring and pinion won't. This is normal.
