    Thanks so much for the info. I found the trans model number and its a DG250 so maybe the problem with no 1st gear startup in Drive is an adjustment or something. Regarding the thrust bearing, I'll bring in my shop manuel along with the new crankshaft to the rebuilder, though wish there was a Stude mechanic close by ( San Luis Obispo area of central Calif.) Gene

    Gene, If you're willing to travel a bit, there's a Stude mech near me. Guy knows a Stude engine like the back of his hand. He's in Three Rivers, CA. That's about 3 hours from you. Good work and resonable!

      I understand that the auto. trans model number may be difficult to read on a '55 car, but I missed the advice on where to look for it. Could you refresh me, please?

        There's an oval tag on the left side of the tranny. On the back half of the unit.
