Flywheel bolt torque?

  • Flywheel bolt torque?

    I won't have access to my shop manual for awhile and need to know the torque specs for the flywheel nuts on my 289 also do these require lock washers? The length does look long enough. Are the original nuts thinner? I've replaced them with grade 8 nuts. Thanks,

    I think they came with lock nuts but on my car I used grade 8 flat washers and blue loctite because I am using an aluminum flywheel. I don't think lock washers really do much of anything so even with iron I would probably go that route.

    To answer your question, FSM says pressure plate to flywheel 13 to 15 ft-lbs and flywheel to crank 33 to 35 ft-lbs. I think when I put my engine together I put a little "extra" on those specs as I was using all Grade 8 hardware and I wanted to make sure they didn't relax. I made my own crank bolts by grinding one flat off of standard Grade 8 bolts. they were a couple 64ths longer than stock but that didn't appear to be a major issue - no interference with clutch disc.

      They use a 3/8" lock washer. IIRC they are the multiple tooth external non split type.(Have no idea what the technical name for them is).

        Darryl; be carefull here! It sounds to me like you have the Auto. Trans bolts in the crankshaft. If you cannot put a thick nut and a split type lockwasher on them, they are the wrong bolts.

        Do you remember all those posts on this subject where Mr. Biggs is warning us to get these right, before putting the rear main cap on and the oil pan? This is what he was talking about.

        Automatics get (6) 534587 27/32" X 3/8" X 24 (NF) bolts,(6) G120382 lockwashers and (6) G120369 3/8" X24 Nuts.


        Standard Trans. cars get (6) 534532 1 13/64" X 3/8" X 24 (NF) fine bolts, (6) of the same lockwasher and (6) G120369 Nut.

          The bolts I have are the stock ones for the 3-speed overdrive trans that came in my 53. I was going to use the split type lock washers which are thicker than the ones Transtar60 spoke of. That may be the problem.

            The late parts book shows just a 3/8" lock washer - but I think the toothed washer you are talking about is called a "shakeproof" washer.

              BTW I used 1-1/4" bolts on my car; they don't appear to be an issue; but maybe the Fidanza aluminum flywheel is slightly thicker than stock.

                Having just transferred flywheels from Pete's old engine to the new one, I confess I used only the self-locking nuts that are original. And strictly speaking, the special, odd-headed (factory) bolts were about 3/32nds shorter than what the parts book specifies. Both the one's I've been driving on for 17 years AND the ones in the "new" engine.
                Like I said, only the self-locking nuts were employed and these JUST manage to completely grip the bolt. That is to say, there's maybe ONE honest thread protruding past the crown of the nut. Since they're self-locking nuts (and they still had GOOD bite to their crimped ends!), I'd rather have the nut fully on the shank than worry about a lock-washer. Lock-tite might have been a nice touch - I didn't bother.[:I] I'm hoping for another 17 years of service.

                  N8; you and Transtar60 can talk about the inside star lockwashers (shakefroof) (flat) whatever, all you want, BUT, they were used on Exhaust Manifold Bolts with the very thick flat washers! Thats where you have seen them! They never went on Crankshaft bolts at the factory, so maybe someone over the years put them on your cars!
