  • Avanti Rear Window

Looking for original replacement 63 Avanti rear window? How much of a difference in rarity is the tinted verses standard and was one version used more on the early 63's compared to the 64's?

Outside of the tinting, there were no differences on Avanti rear glass...maybe later Avanti II glass with the defroster wires (maybe that was an add-on system rather than embedded in the glass...I don't know). What makes the difference between early, mid and late Studebaker production is the trim and hold downs. With the glass pulling out at high speeds Studebaker had to make several modifications to the clamping and trim.

As far as rarity between tinted and non-tinted I have no clue. I would think most a/c cars had tinted glass but it's anyone's guess on non-a/c cars.

As of maybe 5 years ago Avanti II rear glass with defroster was still available from SASCO. If I had an Avanti that I was considering using as a driver, and the back window had to come out anyway, I'd give serious thought to coughing up the ducats for one of those.

It'd ruin the lines, but maybe even adding a rear wiper from a car with a similarly immense rear window (Porsche 944 comes immediately to mind, and I have an extra wiper assy. for one in fact) would be a good idea for a real everyday car. And a squirter too, although the Porsche never had one, you could just use a generic pushbutton and a nozzle to match the fronts...

I have a defroster style window which was installed but never driven with. My plans were to install it in my '66 Avanti II. Both are tinted. I would consider selling the defroster glass, but would rather sell the non-defroster glass.
