  • 63 Avanti R1, alternator

Some time in the past the original alt was replaced with a modern one, Mitsubishi, and the voltage regulator was bypassed. I want to install something more correct and to use the original voltage regulator, instead of the present set up. What do you recommend?

you could either locate a good used original one (they're out there) or the old MoPar externally regulated alternators are a bolt in and use the same regulator.

For an R1? I used a GM, there is a thread on here. I have the one I
took off, but the regulator was toast.

I believe you can use a Chrysler transistorized regulator with the original Prestolite alternator, if the difference in appearance doesn't bother you.

Oh, I thought you meant you could use a Chrysler altenator on an Avanti
R1 engine, I have seen them on standard V8s but not an Avanti R1. The
mounting is different. The GM one I used did away with the regulator.

I believe it goes both ways, you can mix and match with impunity.

I don't know if the different brackets of an Avanti make it harder to mount the Chrysler alt. or not.

You can purchase an original looking Prestolite regulator external case with electronic internals vs. the mechanical sytle regular internals from Dave Thibeault. You can probably get this from other vendors as well.

My Avanti has original Prestolite alt. with electronic regulator works great and with my restoration, I plan on keeping them both.

The Hawk and Lark R1's mount in the traditional Studebaker way, the
                        Avanti mounts upsidedown.

There is a thread here somewhere, where a guy used a Toyota alternator. It fit the brackets perfectly, and it looked less conspicuous than the GM or Chrysler swaps.

I just had mine rebuilt and it needed a new stator, along with brushes and bearings. $200!!!

                          But it works great!!!

That was listed for an R2, not sure if its the same as an R1 (John

Vs the GM on the R1 :
