  • Tranny & OD gear oil ?

    Hi All
    I'm sure this has been discussed before but I haven't been able to locate any reference. The manual calls for 80 Wt mineral oil or 30 Wt engine oil. To my knowledge, the GL rating system had not been developed back then and GL1 would now be the closest equal.
    I'm a former truck owner/operator and a firm believer in synthetic gear oils. I've run truck trannys and rear ends over a million miles with virtually no wear with synthetics. Anyway, I was wondering if there is a synthetic replacement that won't damage anything?

    I believe that some here have mentioned using Redline synthetic in their standard shift trannies. I've not personally used the stuff.

      Use the search function at the top of this page. Do searches for Gear oil, Transmission oil, Transmission lube, etc., etc..

        Mike - I have used AmsOil 75-90 Gear Oil in the differential and manual transmissions on my Studebakers for many, many years. I've never encountered any problems. In fact, as you say, there is lots less wear. Also, it works much better in cold temperatures - less resistance to turning and, in case of transmission, easier shifting.

          I love the Redline gear oil, but I have no experience with using it in a trans with OD. It makes a T-10 shift like new however!

            Have you used it in overdrive trannies? My understanding (and I don't claim to be an expert) is an overdrive doesn't want oil that is too "slick"- needs friction to function properly. I know I ruined my overdrive by using regular gear oil.

              When I resurected my 50 Champion w/OD I filled the trans/OD with Mobile 1 synthetic. The shifting and od operation was great. HOWEVER, I soon found oil leaking out of everywhere. I then changed to 30 weight nondetergent engine oil. The leaks didn't completely stop but they sure slowed down. I couldn't tell any difference between the operation of the units with the two different lubes. Both worked great.

They work flawlessly. Dale

                  The most obvious difference between the two occurs during winter. Try shifting a transmission filled with 30 wt oil when the temperature is -40 or colder. I used to have to hold the clutch pedal down for awhile after starting the engine with trans in neutral. The cold transmission oil would stall the engine. Then shifting would be so hard that it felt like the lever was going to break. I'd have to run the engine for a long time with transmission in neutral so the oil would limber up before daring to pull out in traffic. With AmsOil synthetic, I can just start it and go if I want to. I have driven my cars when the temperature was -75. All I have are Studebakers, so one is on the road every day, rain or shine or 50 below.
