  • BALL JOINT QUESTION

    The top of the bolt on a ball joit is slotted for a screw driver...why is that ? What function does it have ? ,,,thanks, John

    So you can hold it with the screwdriver while tightening the nut???

      So you can turn the bolt to the correct position for cotter key installation before tightening the nut.

          Studebaker did not use ball joints.
          Tie rod ends we call them.

              On a Studebaker, he would have to mean a Tie Rod End, however everyone was being nice enough not to tell him!

                  Strictly speaking, a tie rod end is a ball joint, just not what a mechanic thinks of when you say "ball joint." Unless it's a Heim joint or rod end, in which case then it isn't

                    Studebaker used king pins before ball joints came into play. They all did. Studebaker used them till the end. jimmijim

                          Both Charlie and Jerry answered right, as far
                          as what it is used for. I have always used the slot
                          (on the ones that have them) to position and to
                          hold while getting tight on the taper.
