  • Floor shift manual backup light switch ???

    We have 3 speed floor shift top loader (no linkage) transmission in our 57 silver hawk We are restoring;
    1) can someone tell us how to identify it.
    2) How do you hook up backup lights to a top loading tranny.
    Happy New Year,

    Well that depends Dick, on what top loader you are talking about. If it's a late model Ford or Dodge, they usually have a switch location built in somewhere.

    If it is a Stude. Borg Warner T-90 or <s>T-85</s> T-86 with a '37 Stude. car or a Truck or Jeep top (shifter) cover, there would be almost no way to activate the switch short of some kind of crude homemade floor mounted switch sticking up 4 or more inches above the floor that MIGHT hit the lever at the right place?

    Update: Correction, I meant T-86, which of course would be almost identical to a T-90

      You may have to run a switch at the top of your shifter to activate manualy when in reverse.

          There are aftermarket switches that can be screwed into the shift cover of top loader type transmissions. They go into the "tunnels" on top of the cover plate. You may have to tap the hole after removing the small expansion plug filling the hole. The internal shift rod contacts the switch. You just have to figure out which end of the cavity the switch needs to go into.

          Jeep used similar switches in transfer cases to indicate a shift into 4wd on Jeep J-series trucks and Wagoneers.

          Your transmission cannot be a T-85/T89C as those have side covers, not top.

            The borgwarner T86 toploader is what my Gibson uses for a transmission. There is no provision for a backuplight switch. I would fiund a good location and mount a toggle switch like I did with my tractor.

            If you car is ugly then it better be fast.....

              Randall,

              I know that many Gibsons used the smaller T96 B-W transmission. What models used the bigger T86?

                Put in a rocker switch today for backup lights.
