What color ??? 53 Instrument hoods

[Flashback]

My 53 didn't have the original dash. I bought a
complete dash, but it had been painted. I bought
some instrument "hoods" on e-bay, and I have THE
book. I have a original parts car. BUT, I STILL
can't decide on the color on top of the hoods, over
the guages. Is it supposed to be Loma Gray? Or is
it a darker, browner color?????????

I asked the same question recently and got a couple of responses that Loma Gray is correct color.

I believe the INSIDE of the Instru. hoods were a different and unusual color, but not the outside. Someone who currently owns a original or correctly restored '53 Commander Coupe or Hardtop will tell us for SURE, though! [^]

You are right StudeRich. The underside of the top was gold.
Also all the ones I have (12) that haven't been painted, are
almost a chocolate color. Somebody?????

Not to worry, Tex. The vinyl shown is the armrest cover, not the door panel.[)]

Should also mention, the under pod covers are the same color.

LOL, Brad, no worry here. Thanks for the great photo.
I am beginning to think there may have been more than
one color used. I am going to try and post a picture.
Can anyone else shed any light?

I gold on the inside was originaly shiny, but was changed to flat gold during the model year.
I have no idea what the color on the outside of the bezels is. It may take some archive research time to identify it.

The outside of the bezels was darker than Loma Gray (according to my memory).

My '53 hoods are a pretty dark color on the tops. This picture sort of exaggerates the darkness. My car was built in California- don't know if that makes a difference or not for the hoods, but there were differences between SB and California cars.

The gray-brown of the pods in Paul's picture is the color of an original/unpainted '53 Commander Starliner dash that I have, which came from a South Bend car.

My '53 (built in Los Angeles) has hoods of one color, the baby blue that was the interior color for Maui Blue. But I also have a replacement set of hoods that are obviously original, and are chromed.

I am sorry, but I do not believe that either the blue or chrome hoods are Studebaker factory original for 1953. Do you have a part number for them?

Well, Gary, you know these hoods don't have part numbers stamped on them, and I'm not going to start hunting for one just to prove a point. Here's a picture of how the car came, you be the judge:


I got the chromed ones from Steve Allen with a whole dash replacement; the under-dash covers were chrome as well, it actually looks pretty nice.
