Rear Brakes

[63 Champ]

I just recieved my Dads Stude and I am going through the brakes as they are gone. I cant get the drums off of the rear. Do I need a special puller to remove the rear drums on a 63 Champ?

Yes. It must pull on the studs. Do not pull or strike the drums themselves, as you will damage them. Use a search on this site to locate information on rear drum pullers.

I bought this one at autozone for $25.00. They carry them in house. Mine is for 3.75 and 4.5 bolt patterns. It's marked as an Axle puller for a FWD car. Worked perfect on my 4 lug stude. but as you are saying champ, i guess you mean truck so maybe its too small

Take Brad's suggestion. It might help to use a penetrating oil on
the axle before you try to take the drum off. You might also want
to back the axle nut off far enough to make a perch for the ram on
the puller.

I took the castle nut off the axle and reversed it. I rethreaded it backwards until only one or two threads were exposed. I figured this would give the axle some support against flairing out

And, when you put it back together, [u]DO NOT</u> lubricate the taper. Keep it clean and dry.
