This is the engine that I'm putting in the Orange truck. Anybody know what the "lightning bolt" represents?

I've got one one of them in my '55, it's a '63 engine, I thought it was a mis-struck Keystone. The question has been asked before, but not answered.

Going by what I can find, this is a '63 Canadian 259. Is yours the same Tom?

        Anne, that works for me.

It is half of a Keystone, which on the last post about it among other guesses, mine was: an "INSPECTION Stamp" for one of fifty or a hundred, or what ever the criteria was to completely measure and check the block casting and machine work. [^]

It usually had his or her # inside.

So if this block was one used for making sure everything was right, would this be the perfect block? [)]

Mine is a South Bend engine, P95420. Maybe that's why its in such good shape. Not only the inspector did a good job, but the workmen saw him coming and did their best.

Thanks, Rich, that's good to know.

Did each inspector have a different stamp? or was there one and he stamped them all? High mileage on that job....

Yeah Tom, maybe yours was checked by inspector #13 ! Lol! You know, the one that always showed up hung over!

Please remember, I did say it was my (slightly educated) GUESS, if any of these guys actually show up, we could learn for sure what went on in those days. [^]

In all probability, the inspector was a senior worker, lots of seniority, probably left this world not too long after Studebaker closed the shops. None of them now to answer our questions.

Rich, your educated guess is better than our suppositions. You and a couple of others are all we've got.

For a time I worked in a factory machining cast iron crank cases for gas compresses. As I completed my machine work, I stamped my stamp (a flag with an x on it) in the corner. The machines that Studebaker used didn't permit this, or rather the operator didn't have any input into the machines. I spent between 8 and 17 hrs on each crank case, decreasing with experience. I almost miss that job.
