  • B-W overdrive solenoids interchangeable?

I need to replace the solenoid on my overdrive unit. As I understand it, these Borg-Warner overdrives were used on many brands of cars. I realize that I can buy a new unit (for $200+), but working used and NOS units come up on eBay occasionally. I want to save a few bucks, like a good CASO. What years and makes of cars used the same solenoid? Is there a B-W part #, or some other feature (terminal arrangement?) that I can refer to? Any help is appreciated.

As far as I know, all the BW transmissions have the model number (big, easy to read) on them. So, if you have a T-96, then I would think any other T-96 used in another brand of car would be a good donor. Same for T- 85, etc. BW made them and sold them to many manufacturers, they used the same components on them. Now what I DON'T know is if solenoids are interchangable between different BW models... someone smarter than I needs to respond!

Perhaps solenoids are interchangable between models, but not voltages. Different internal connections there, three wires vs two wires.

There is quite a variety of solenoids out there, but nearly all of them have them same mechanical interface with the transmission. So they will physically interchange, but with different electrical requirements, not all will functionally interchange.

Assuming it's for your '50 Champion, you need a six-volt, two-wire solenoid. I think all six volt solenoids have only two terminals, but there are a few two-terminal 12-volt ones out there, so having two terminals is not a guarantee that a solenoid is six volts. Any solenoid known to have come from a '47 to '55 Studebaker should suit your needs.

I apologize for not being clearer about what I need. Yes, I need a 6 volt, two terminal solenoid for my 50 Champion. I'm not sure if its a T-85 or T-96, and the car isn't handy, but I'm pretty sure its original equipment. I see a lot of solenoids for Fords advertised. I thought I learned at some point that Ford solenoids are the same as those used on Studebakers, but that Hudson (maybe Packard) solenoids had a shorter shaft. Is that correct?

Most all the BW solenoids are interchangable.
Packards, not all, and some others have a different
            shaft length. My 53, with a T86 has a 3 wire 12V,
from a 58, T96. Most all the ford and chev will work,
with the exclusion of convertibles. Just use a 2 wire
6 volt, check the shaft length.

Do any of you have a serviceable used or NOS 6v OD solenoid that you would sell (cheap)?

Thanks for the tip. It didn't come up on my searches because I spelled solenoid with an "e".
