  • Broken Hood Release Quick Fix

My hood release cable broke yesterday so I went back over to my mechanic this morning to see if we could figure out how to get the hood open and repair the cable.

He put the car on the lift, scouted around and found a flush rubber stopper up in each wheel well. He pulled them out and they were right below the latch on each side. He made a long pointed tool by grinding down a screwdriver, inserted it into the latch, and pulled outwards and each latch popped right open with no damge to any part of the car.

He then used a bug nut on the end of the cable pull and I was back in business. The best part was he did not even charge me for the fix.

And as you might have guessed, those rubber plugs are there by design for exactly that reason. Studebaker was thinking ahead on that one. It's described in the shop manual... Russ Farri

I really need to get that manual ordered. I am sure my mechanic would appreciate it.

I am really lucky to have this guy, he loves old cars and can sort out a problem pretty fast. He has great instincts and is very knowledgeable about carbs and old ignition systems. Needless to say the shop is always full of cars and he never advertises.

Me thinks that this guy has seen an Avanti before, or maybe a Corvette! [^]

The shop manual also provides instructions on how to open the trunk should your trunk lid cable break.
