The ball, it's the darn ball!

Anyone know what size the ball thread is on my 4 speed stick?

It's the original ball on the Avanti and I would like to put on a larger ball or Hurst T handle...........I know it's sacrilege:-)

Go to a hardware store, buy one each of the following nuts. 1/4 20, 1/4 28, 5/16 18, 3/16 24, 3/8 16, 3/8 24. One of them will fit. Oh yeah, figure out a way to tell them apart, each in its own bag, or some such.

Or maybe another option would be to take the knob with you and find a bolt that will screw into it with your fingers at the hardware store. Buy that one and note the thread.

You might be able to "bush" the Hurst ball/handle down with a helicoil..

You can use a guide from die & tap set if you still have it at home for measurement. Hope it helps you.

Put a nut on the threaded section first, screw on ball to desired orientation, Tighten nut against ball.

In some cases you need a low-profile nut for a locker; if you can't find one you could grind down a stock one. Another way is to thread the shaft down another half-inch or so.

Or you can put Loc-tite on the threads, turn the knob to where you want, and it should stay put.

Get a thread gage at Harbor Frieght/Sears/FAPS. You will then know for sure and have the gage for future use.

Took ball with me to Advance Auto Parts.......they had a board with two dozen small threaded rods.......the ball fit the 5/16 18 like a glove!

Laemmle, I don't know where you live, but here in the Midwest we have a hardware chain called Menard's. In their specialty fastener drawers aisle, they have a 5/16-18 jam nut that you can thread on first, then thread on the shifter ball and back the nut out to the ball to keep it snug and not twist loose. 29 cents + tax.
