rough running

Our '55 Champion was running great until today. Driving along, and as it revs up a bit, right about the time the automatic transmission shifts, the engine starts sputtering and backfiring.

I can usually fix things with some direction, but diagnosis is not my strong suit. Any ideas of where to start. My first thought was the timing or vacuum advance.

I would start with timing, but concentrate on the distributor as a whole.
