  • 289 oil pan gasket question

Rookie needs help. Read the past threads, manual, still not sure! Engine 289 is on a stand and upside down. Oil pan gaskets... Rear cork seal gets worked down into the square holes on the sides at the block & cap. Got that part. The tabs on the long side gaskets...do the tabs get bend down (engine upside down) and worked into the square holes along side the cork? Or do the tabs get turned up and seal to the cork? Thanks, in advance, for your help.

RTV in the square holes after the rear main seal tabs are snipped off flush, then the little square pieces of cork are pushed into the 2 square openings, then the side gasket tabs overlay those cork pieces, and then the rear pan seal is pressed part way into the rear main channel over top of the tabs. A little extra RTV at this interface is a good idea. The rear pan seal will appear too long, but don't shorten it. As you pull the pan down that seal will compress into the channel of the rear main. This will require 2 longer capscrews at the pan rear corners to pull the pan down, and then replaced after the pan is seated on the gaskets. Cork seals have a tendency to shrink over time, and that is why the seal lengths, front and back, shouldn't be shortened.

you can even use longer threaded bolts with a nut to help tighten the pan over the rear seal and then replace then with stock once the pan is on tight.
