Key Question

The keys to my 61 Hawk have been lost. It looks like I can buy just the key and cylinder for the ignition and replace the one in my switch. It looks like I have to buy the entire assembly for the doors and trunk.

What keys are supposed to match on Studebakers? I assume doors and trunk are the same and ignition is different. Once I get everything can I take them to the local locksmith and get them re-keyed as needed?

A better than average locksmith should be able to make you a key to fit the existing lock cylinders. Probably cheaper to take them to him instead of calling someone out to the car. That way you can shop around a lot easier. Remove the ignition switch, not the cylinder.

I bet your local locksmith can make you a key for your current switch. They will know what type of key blank is needed.

He'll have the definitive answer to which keys should match which, Wayne, so if he doesn't find his way to this thread, I'd PM him.

MY best guess is the ignition key should also unlock the doors, while the other key should unlock the trunk and glovebox (if equipped with a lock). That's how it was on both my '59 Lark VI and my '64 Daytona, IIRC.

Yes Keoni is correct, Studebakers are like older Chrysler Products: the Ignition and doors match, and the glovebox and Trunk match.

They ARE different blanks however, that is because the Trunk Key/Glovebox is a (4) tumbler lock, and the Ignition/Doors is a much higher quality FIVE tumbler lock. I can usually find a matching trunk key after 3 or 4 trys of my other Studebakers' keys to open the cheap desk key type Trunk locks on cars with lost keys.

The problem with removing the lock cylinder to be replaced, is that you MUST have the key to remove it from the Switch!

If you look at Pg. 175 Electrical Section of the 2010 Studebaker International Catalog or Pg.90 & 92 Of Body Section all of your KEY and LOCK questions will be clearly answered and understood! [^]

I think Keoni MAY have been referring to my son Dave, who actually is StudeDave57 as in lots of 1957 Studes. and the official SDC registrar of '57 Sedans & Wagons.
StudeDave DOES know a few things about Studes after being around me for a fair part of his life, and owning 6 or 7 Studes himself! [^]

Thanks guys, my local locksmith thinks he can make keys if he has a blank that will fit. If he doesn't have one, I remember seeing blanks on one of the web sites. Now I know what is supposed to match.

check my web site for key blank numbers. I think Y133 is the one you need for the ignition. If you want to get real sexy SI sells repro key blanks.

If the locks are original, a good locksmith can make keys for it using the key codes on the production order for your car. If you don't have it already, the production order is available from the Studebaker Museum. I did that for a '65 Cruiser I bought at a sheriff's sale (no keys).

Sorry for the tease. It was the only production order I had handy.
My original order, made in November 63 and subsequently cancelled by Studebaker was for a 289 4-bbl. When I reordered from Hamilton I could only get a 259 with overdrive and the 4-bbl fell out of the order somehow. I also couldn't get factory a/c, reclining buckets, headrests, all tinted glass or Hill-Holder from Hamilton. I settled for reclining split seats, tinted windshield only and had the Studebaker a/c, Hill-Holder and headrest dealer-installed in the original sales order.
Interestingly, when Studebaker cancelled my first order, they tried to get me to take a similar car from factory inventory. It was exactly like what I had ordered except that it had a black interior instead of red and it had the third seat option. I've often wondered what became of that car.
