  • Hood Springs/Trunk Springs 62 Hawk

    What good are the hood springs if you still have to use the bar to hold up the hood?
    The trunk is tough to lift up, should it be easier? Once up it will stay up.

    The trunk can be difficult to open and close at times especially if not used often. When mine starts to stiffen up I spray the hinges with lubricant and all is well again.

      I believe that the hood springs help direct the hinges up & down. I think the issue with these hoods is that they are very long and front heavy with the metal grill attached. If it relied on hinge springs to lift it, the hood might buckle. As for the trunk lid on my Hawk, it feels like you are lifting 50 pounds until its up part way and then it gets easy. When closing it slams hard if you dont hold back on it.

        Forgot to mention that a friend installed struts to his GT hood.
        So know it goes up by itself and stays up. He also set it up so that the hood sits higher and your less inclined to knock your head on the latch.

            if you don't have the springs on a Hawk hood you have to be real careful opening it not to send the corners into the cowl. Even with the springs, you should pull forward on it a little when opening.

                  Photos might take a little time to get but I will give you a brief description.
                  Firstly he curved 2 pieces of square tube to the shape of the bonnet.
                  From memory they were about 20mm/25mm square so that they would fit inside the outer lip of the bonnet.
                  These were spot welded to the inside portion of that outer lip (one on each side) and are virtually unseen. He did this to stiffen up the bonnet to stop any kinking and to spread the load over a greater area.
                  To that was welded a small plate with a few holes (adjustment only) that one end of the strut was attached.
                  The other end of the strut was bolted to the inner fender on or around the little bulge that they have. That location point will of course depend on the length of the strut you buy. It works well and has the added effect of pushing the bonnet away from the cowling when lifting and the bonnet sits up higher with a clear work area . If you are patient I can get some photos and measurements.

                      Specifications
                      Tube size 22mm and rolled to the hoods shape.
                      Struts overall length 640mm (fully extended). Ram extends 290mm.
                      Pick up point on the hood is 450mm from outer hood bolt.

                            Redline Tuning of Dexter, Michigan (45 miles west of Detroit) has offered to evaluate making struts available for this type of installation. Can somebody with a GT Hawk, in that area, look them up and drive their GT over for the evaluation?
