  • 57 SilverHawk turn signal problem

Somethiing simple turns complicated!!! Disconnected cloth covered turn signal wires from harness @ steering column & tagged cloth insulated wires w/masking tape. Turned upside down to store on steering wheel---turned into a regret real fast when the gear box lube started dripping. Now I have the turn signal unit off the colume, the cloth wire insulation needs repaired (actual bare wire), I can not read my masking tape labels. Any recommendations on how to ring-out the wires to determine which turn signal wire goes to which harness connector. Is the best repair to solder new wires to the turn signal mechanical unit?...or just find another unit?
