I have the engine out! I will be going over everything while it is out. I don't know why there were 4 gaskets under the carb. Is it supposed to prevent fuel boiling out after shut down? I plan to rebuild the carb and don't plan to put a thick spacer under it. I will consider shimming the body. I will reinforce the battery area also. Thanks for the help.

I can think of a few reasons why someone put so many gaskets under the carburetor. One...someone was trying to cool the fuel charge as it goes into the intake; two...someone wants to increase low end performance by trying make some kind of homemade hi-rise intake; and three...the base of the carburetor is warped and someone was trying to compensate by putting so many gaskets under it to stop the vacuum leak.

In the Corvette world that's known as having "Bubba" work on your car rather than someone who knows what they're doing. It sounds like your car had been "Bubba-ized" at some point.
