About the only fuel additives worth using are a good isopropyl alcohol "gas dryer"...it absorbs any moisture in the tank and allows it to burn with the fuel. Making sure your gas tank is as full as possible also keeps condensation from forming on the tanks walls.
The other additive worth using is a gasoline stabilizer during long periods of inactivity or storage.

A friend did a study regarding the ethanol issue for a chapter newsletter. His conclusion was to recommend using STA-BIL in the fuel. Using 4 oz. of STA-BIL and 4 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil in 10 gal. of the highest octane fuel available appears to have eliminated post-detonation issues with my Avanti R-1. During times of inactivity I try to keep the tank full to inhibit condensation.

Yes, I use 100 oct Avgas in my R-1 Avanti and R-2 GT but the average Stude owner might have problems getting it. If you have a small, local airport check with them. 4.35 a gallon in South Carolina, the cars love it and no vapor lock issues...the shelf life is measured in years! I give my Studebakers a few gallons of avgas when I feel like spending the money for it. I've found that 5 or 6 gallons of 100LL added to pump gas works wonders and stops any detonation. I also use Lucas octane booster and that works well too. One bottle of the Lucas additive in a tank of gas and the Avanti stops pinging even in hot weather. The problem in the Los Angeles area is most of the FBO's don't want sell avgas to anyone but aircraft operators. I buy it when I go flying and no one is around the fuel pit. Bud
