  • Avanti instrument lights

Maybe it's because I am getting old, but I find the red instrument lights are very dim. I would like to know if there is any publication listing wattages for these small bulbs so that maybe I could move up a few watts. Incidently, a product called Dykem--used by machinists to lay out parts to be machined, is very good to color the bulbs without diminishing the brightness very much.

You can install bulbs of whatever brightness you can find provided they have the proper base. You can leave them as white light or you can go to places like Pep Boys that carry a gel sleeve made for different bulbs. They come in different colors, including red. They also provide even color to the gauges rather than different intensities of red from bulbs unevenly coated.

What number are the bulbs you want to replace?

jt, Way back when, there was a red bulb dye available from SDC vendors. One coat was sufficient to give a brighter glow then the originals. Both the low and high setting on the switch gave a readable view.

I use red glass dye on mine. The seem to be bright enough in high to use. Stan Gundry's book covers dying the bulbs.

Or, you can get them from www.studebakerparts.com for $1 each.
