    It's normally not a good idea to argue with the boss. Companies are not democracies. If the guy who signs the check wants it done a certain way, that's the way its done. When you cited the discount, the guy should have got the manager, not argued the point. Had he done that in the first place he would have saved face and not got everyone irritated. Sounds like he'll be collecting a little unimployment to me.


    Side story about modern parts stores: Called around for a special battery... Advance Auto had one- $199 list, said he'd give it to me for $110... went to get it and got this glum-faced jerk... looked it up and said $128... told him I was quoted $110; his reply was to jab his finger at the screen and deadpan, "It says right there, $128" and just ignored my protests! I needed it quickly, so I said whatever... as he was typing it up, the manager walked by and told him it was quoted at $110... boy was he ticked! Argued with the manager a little- I couldn't resist extending my hands sideways and saying, "Just like I said!" Jerk walked away, and manager finished up and apologized. I told the manager the guy was a jerk- he apologized again and insisted I take some free windshield washer fluid; and promised he'd speak to the jerk...

    I left hoping he'd be fired, but then thought, what's the use, probably will be replaced by the same.... oh well...[xx(]

    Ron, in the good old days before the Harley evolution engine, I always carried tools on my Kawasaki to work on my buddys Harleys. In nine years of long haul rides, not a year went by that I wasn't wrenching on at least one of them.

    I didn't expect to take my word for it; the obvious correct way to handle it was to give the customer the benefit of the doubt and go ask the 3 or 4 other employees in the store if one of them spoke with me... also, knowing I quoted a price less than what the computer said, that should have told him that I must have spoken to a manager, making that even easier... what made him a jerk was not bothering to give that tiny effort, instead choosing to be snotty with me.

    Being aware there's a NAPA directly next door to them should make treating customers well that much more important!

    Or better yet, go get the manager, "Oh, I'm sorry, I can't authorize that. Let me get the manager and see what we can do. I'll only be a few seconds." The problem with a lot of chain stores is that they forget to teach customer service to thier employees. Some are better than others.

    Robert, I'd say the glum-faced jerk was doing what he'd been told (charge the price on the screen). It's more than likely he doesn't have the authority to grant discounts and how many other customers might try the "I was told the price was XYZ"?
    Don't be too hard on him, he might only have to learn how to smile and say no politely.

    Makes me wonder: What do you highly experienced guys recommend one carry in a daily driven Stude that sometimes makes longer trips?

    Amen to what you say, Jake! I've acquired older NAPA books and use them quite a bit. With the newer generation of counter jocks - if it ain't in the computer, they ain't got it - period. "Who MADE Studebaker??? If you could tell me who made them, we might be able to find this part like that!"[8]

    By the way - the only way I've ever gotten NAPA to find a V8 fuel pump for me is using the application for Studebaker trucks. The number for that piss-poor Carter wanna-be is M2211. But like I said - the counter jocks know NOTHING about the vehicles including whether or not they ever even MADE trucks![}] I agree it's better than nothing if you're stranded someplace, BUT... if we all had the obligatory spare fuel & water pump in the trunk, we'd be back on the road faster than the Bow-Tie-engined Studes because they have to go to a parts store and retrieve the parts first to be able to fix their motor! (The assumption being that since they've got an everybody's-got-one powerplant, they don't NEED to carry spares.

    I don'y know about you guys but I still have some of the good old parts guys in my area and when you mention Studebaker they know what you're talking about. On the other hand I have accquired many new and old parts books and I end up doing all the research myself because I don't trust the guy behind the counter. They don't have the experience with the old stuff and they just don't know any better.

    Rich, poor quality it may be, but... if one is stuck on the side of the road with a tired old Carter pump that just gave out? NAPA's cheap imitation can be a godsend. Tired old Carter can be refreshed at one's leasure.

    Heck, some places don't just list it - they actually have it! A few years back I thought I'd give the local Garnett Auto a chance and they actually had a new, in the box, master cylinder for my '49 Champion. $33 plus tax.

    Along the same lines, I got my new front brake rubber lines from
    NAPA; they look real nice but appear to be a smaller diameter
    than the stock hoses. Is ths something to be concerned about?
