    OK, my Lark has been in the driveway for about a month, started once a week. I live on a pretty steep hill, and this AM took it out of the driveway after warming up for about 5 minutes.

    When I started up the hill, she wouldn't pull. I had my foot almost down to the ground and barely made it up the hill at about 5 MPH. When I got to the top and got my foot off the accellerator, she died.

    She restarted and on the level she was fine, but this is the first time I've had this behavior. Can anyone tell me what's happening? Still too cold and valves out of adjustment? Carb needs rebuilding? Help!

    How long has it been since your last tune up? I would start with the standard items, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs ( check compression while you have the plugs out), points and condenser, and if you could find someone with something to check coil output. you have to start somewhere and I believe I would start with fuel filter,lines, and pump first. Hope this helps!

        Well, I've owned the car for about 2 months, and it was a 17-year-old's daily driver before that, so, tuneup? [:I] Unknown. Guess I'll start there.

        Gas in the tank... I put in about half-a-tank three weeks ago and now the gauge says a little lower than a quarter, probably due to evaporation.

        Where's the fuel pickup in these cars, front or rear? Are you thinking it could have been starving due to the angle of the hill?

          The fuel pickup is sorta to the front of the tank, but even if you were on a hill steep enough to deny the tube fuel to suck, what's in the fuel pump and lines should get you up the hill. This is a V8, right? Shouldn't need to hold the foot to the floor. I know you're in the San Diego area so I doubt altitude plays a role.
          Does it have a filter in the fuel line? If so, see if it's clogged.[B)]

            Yes, it's a 259/4bbl. There is a filter; I'll check it. Thanks for the help, guys!

              Also check for a stuck choke. That could have flooded the engine and not allowed it to rev.

                A weak coil has been know to allow an engine to run, seemingly perfect, but when called on to exert some oomph, it will fall on it's face.. Still run ok, just no power...

                  Thanks guys! I think the coil is original [:0] And I know the choke plate and release mech is sticky - I have to set it by hand when I start.

                        Check your fuel pump! Trust me BTDT!LOL I swore that wasn't the problem and guess what???[:I] The real tip off on this one is the hill climbing issue. If it's ok on the level and won't climb a hill, it's the fuel pump!

                            Had the same problem with my 50 Champion. It had a pin hole in the flex line to the fuel pump that went undetected until I parked facing down a steep hill. Found a puddle of fuel. Turned out with a half tank or less on a steep uphill, enough air was sucked through that hole that the pump could no longer supply sufficient fuel. Changed the line, no more problem!!

                              How is the oil, dip stick indicates over full? I say this because the fuel pump could be pumping fuel into the crankcsse due to a diaphram leak.... Bad fuel pump is the problem if it is leaking gas into the crankcase or onto the ground. Good luck.
