Hi, I am searching for pics of the hood springs for my 64 Champ. It has one spring on each side that goes straight down into the fenders but seems to want a spring to pull forwards on the hood. Can someone tell me or show me what I might be missing? I will post pics of what I have as soon as I can sort through everything. Thanks,Steve

This is what I have now.

Thanks Alan,I will google that number and see if I can decipher anything from that. This is what I have but something isnt working correctly. The hood has dug into the fenders and bent the corners. Steve

Thanks Alan,That is actually a C-Cab number but it led me to the correct ones. Those are the ones I have (maybe they are weak?). Should there be something more in the piece that crosses between the hinges? Thanks,Stevesigpic

I dont know. It was represented as having been a farm truck from day one but I tend to believe it was either a state truck or a school system truck. I am convinced the milage is right so I would doubt a state truck but I also believe the bed and doors came from one truck, the hood from another and the cab and fenders from yet another. I am assuming the cab and fenders are original to the rest of the truck but no guarantees. It is entirely possible the stuff that makes me believe the milage was also replaced. Stevesigpic

Those are the only springs used on the hinges. They dont counterbalance the hood but rather just aid in the hinge motion so that the hood moves forward as it goes up. Soak the hinges with a good penetrating oil & work the hood & see if the hinges move more freely. If not you may have to remove the hood & then the hinges, releasing that spring and working the hinges untill they are loose. When you reinstall the springs, I make a spring puller out of some coat-hanger in the shape of a "T". Loop the top of the "T" 3 or 4 times to make the handle area strong. On mine I cover the top handle area with some electrical tape so it doesnt bite into the hand. at the bottom of the "T" (pointed end) curl it 180 degrees & grind or file the tip to a taper. I use these on light to medium tension springs with success. Dont try it on heavy springs like the ones used on G.M.hood hinges.

Thanks Warren, I will start with spraying everything. Hopefully it will be that simple as the springs actually seem to me like they have good tension. The design seemed wrong to me with the way everything moves so I neglected the obvious first step and just assumed it needed more pieces. Stevesigpic

OK Everything is oiled and moving freely. The hinge bolts are loose and when I tighten them the hood wont close (binds on cowl). I attempted to adjust it but had no success so I loosened the bolts back up and got back to what I had to begin with. I am hoping for a call from a local stude guy sometime soon that I believe can help me but I am stopping on this part until I can get to him. I need more expirienced eyes to look at it and see if there is something bent or just out of adjustment. Thanks,Stevesigpic
