  • Motor mounts for a SB Chevy into a 1966?

That 1966 Stude sedan is apparently still for sale here in the Phx area. It was the one that had been last registered ca. 1975 and someone yanked the 283 out and did a terrible/incomplete swap of (probably) a 259 Stude Eight.

Assuming I do get the car; depending on finances that is, can someone post a link to a Stude vendor that may have SB Chevy motor mounts. brackets, etc? The plan for this car will be a 350 TBI/700R4 sourced out of, say, a 1988 Chevy Suburban or pickup.

Virtually all Stude vendors carry the repopped SBC front mounts.

        Here's one...

Mounting the TH700R4 is a little tougher. You can start with the 65-66 trans mount, but it will have to be modified. You'll need a custom driveshaft, special speedometer cable, custom throttle linkage, cooling, custom exhaust (or Avanti II head pipes on rams horn manifolds), probably modifications to the floor tunnel and front crossmember that used to support the Stude bellhousing, custom shifter.

So Dick what would be the least painful Chevy into Lark body combo ? That would seem to be the house play but if there is one that beats that, I would like to hear...

The LEAST painful would be just what Studebaker did in '65 and '66. That is a small block Chevy motor and Flightomatic, or BW T86 three speed with or without overdrive. Single exhaust. Using all parts found on 65 and 66 Studes. This would be for a '63 and up Lark. I have not done a '59-62 so there may be some changes needed for those.

The stick shift (especially with the OD) would be a nice set up. The Flightomatic, less so...but could be at least as good as a TH350 if a first gear start valve body was used.

If you wanted to use a GM transmission, there will be some mods necessary. The smaller GM transmissions are easier (Powerglide, TH 350, TH2004R).

Dick: since some of the Stude platform based Avanti's did use the 700R4 (1983-85?), any idea how Avanti did fit that 'box in?

I used a turbo 350 and had plenty of room for it in a 62 lark. If I had more $ i'd go for one of the 200 r4's that built for a little more power. Stude factory mounts worked great and the trans crossmember was about 10 mins to make. Exhaust I did the same thing as dick and used rams horns and the avanti pipes. made it all fit very easy. I put in a ford 8.8 rear end so driveshaft had to be custom made but that wasn't too bad $. All in all the car is turning out great in terms of it all fitting and working out good.

I have no idea, but there should be some here that own one and could supply some pictures for you.

Congrats, Rick! I'm coming down the home stretch on my '63 also. The mechanicals are done enough that I can drive the car, and I'm just about to finish the interior.

I'd also go for the TH2004R for the perfect automatic combo.

The Chevy in a Lark is a good swap for non purists. Takes a lot of weight off the front, fairly easy, more (inexpensive) power potential. Somebody should write a book on it .

And when one thinks about it: the SB Chevy (1965-85) was used in [u]more</u> Stude based cars than the typical 232? to 289 series of motors (1951-64).
