I had this hapen to my '47 Commander some years ago. I even bought a new control box, but decided to try freeing up the old one. As I remember, I took the linkage loose per the shop manual instructions for adjusting the linkage. When the rods were free, I was able to move the levers on the box until they worked properly. then I adjusted the rods per the shop manual.

It is possible for the motor mounds to sag to the point that the shift linkage does not operate properly. Oil saturation of the motor mounts might cause this, also. Next look at the linkage, and the bushings around the linkage. Basically, look at the easy stuff first, before you tear into the steering column.

We're not sure what you mean by 'stuck'. is it stuck in two gears and won't go, is it stuck in first gear and won't get out? We need more details.
