Remember that trucks used a different prefix - my champ six powered '49 2R-5 starts with 1R. I beleive the M-series used the letter M, though I have never heard of a "N"!

    Art-
South Bend-built Champion engine numbers of that era were all digits. 1949 SB Champion numbers started with 441001. Hamilton-built Champion engine numbers had a G prefix. 1949 Canadian Champion engine numbers started with G-709401

1949 Commander engine numbers started with H-326001. Apparently all were built in South Bend.

I don't see any listing for an N prefix, but it could be from a Weasel or other application.

It looked like an "N". What letters do 1949 engines start with?

The S.D.C. Home page, tech tips section, list of 6 cyl. engine numbers seems to indicate the SC16824 is a Canadian 1960 Lark 170" engine. The N prefix does not show on the list. Are you sure it is an N?

    engine numbers??

If Dwain is listening (or anyone else who can help), a friend wants
to rebuild 2 - six cylinder engines but he wants to know what he's
starting with. Engine numbers on the block are:
    N299523
    SC16824
Both could be Canadian engines and we believe the first one is a 1949. Anyone know for sure?
