  • Ignition Switch Lock Up

The ignition switch on my 84 Avanti is locking up and not releasing. The key appears fine and once it does unlock, the rest of the ignition switch functions fine. This is the GM style lock where you push in on the key and then rotate the switch. It is taking a lot of "jiggling" though to get it unlocked. Any suggestions on what the failure is and how does the switch come apart from the column? When the steering wheel is locked the shifter lever is also locked in park.
    Thanks.

Since the problem is with a GM part, the best answer to this problem, would be to get on a Chevy Forum and ask them.
However, that switch operates a lever to a plastic module under the dash (on the column), which moves a slider, distributing power to various systems. One is a solenoid that releases your gearshift..

You will need a special tool to get the top part of the column apart after you get the steering wheel off. A long shot might be to try some lock-ease or grafite in the key-lock assembly as it could be dry.
