  • spark plugs again

Just bought 857 rh18y champion plugs from napa. they said it will burn hotter than H14y that i asked for and would be better for today gas. The 857 rh18y will extend into a 63 289 in a GT hawk slightly more than the h14y. does anyone see this as a problem? the heads are stock but it does have new pistons (if that makes any difference).

If the engine is stock it's unnecessary to run a hotter a plug than specified. Gasoline is blended today for modern fuel injected engines, not for carbureted ones. I'm no expert but changing something simply because the counter guy at NAPA said so may not be good without more information. He may have told you because he had those pugs in stock and not the other.

I would contact some techs at Champion and take their advice.

The recommended spark plugs for the stock V8's and OHV 6's is a Champion RH18Y [857]. This is the plug that is listed in the newest Champion catalogue. Autolite lists the 437 or 216 plugs for use in the stock Stude OHV engines. Bud

Except for the "R"....no need for a resistor plug.
        Wont hurt...but not required.

I just use J14Y plugs. I buy them off ebay, for less than the local FLAPS.

The reach of a plug can harm your engine, if the reach is long enough to interfere with moving parts.

Regarding heat range, a plug should be selected based on the "reading" of you existing plugs. A brand new engine driven on the highway will use a cooler plug than an older engine putting around town. And it isn't uncommon to find a hotter plug in a cylinder that is a little worn.
