  • Paint question

I have a 57 Golden Hawk being painted. My pictures don't show clearly.

The channel that holds the trunk weatherstrip: where is the break between the trunk color and body color?

Gallivan, I checked my '57 Golden Hawk and nice '53 South Bend built Commander Starliner. Both cars appear that they were painted with the deck lids down. So NO body color should appear in the trunk area including the corner stiffner up by the hinges. Apparently enough paint "blow" down into the channel to give a nice edge on the body side of the channel and the rubber covered the rest. Since primer isn't water proof, I would paint as much of the channel I could with the body color without it showing in the trunk area.

Just have the shop paint the "rain gutter" as stated above, primer is NOT waterproof! and you will eventually get rust! Of course, you could also mix in some clear with the primer IF you wanted it to look factory!

As per suggestions, he split the middle of the rain gutter trough and sprayed Studebaker greige from the middle of the rain gutter in, and will paint body color from the middle out.

Hopefully when the weatherstrip is in, it will look like overspray through the gap in the deck lid, and everything will be covered.

PS I had a terrible time finding a paint code for the trunk color. I finally found a phone# of a body shop from a 2007 post, called them, they gave me the # of the paint shop they used.

I think it looks good, but will need to park next to an unmolested original. If it still looks good, I will post the paint code here.
