Are all Studebaker(259and 289) V-8 starters the same size and will they interchange? Also 6volt and 12 volt.

Here is a discussion about starters on a previous thread.

what starters fit the 259 V-8 auto trans? Will a 1956 12 volt stater fit on my 1955 259 V-8? I've changed to 12 volt battery and alternator. Thanks

The ring gear on the 6 volt flywheel is different, so you would have to change that too.

However the 6 volt starter will work just fine on 12 volts, it just spins faster. My Champ has a 6 volt starter and the only real problem I've had is it lunched the starter drive years ago and I pulled out about half of my remaining hair trying to figure out why I couldn't get a starter to work until I figured out it had a 6 volt starter.

The difference on the 6 volt vs 12 volt starter is: (other than the obvious) The ring gears ARE different as already stated, and the armature shaft is bigger, thus a 12 volt starter drive will not fit, BUT, if you use a late model trans (56 and up) and leave your car 6 volt, just turn down the armature shaft to accept the 12 volt starter drive. and YES, it does work! My 52 Commander has a 3 speed Flight o matic in it, and still is a 6 volt + ground car, with an am/fm stock looking radio and a cd changer! and ONLY 1 battery and it's 6 volt!!

If you are converting your 55 259 to 12 volts, use the six volt starter. Have it professionally gone thru, new bushings and brushes, etc. The starter will never know the difference, but you certainly will.

Thanks for the information. My starter drive went south just needed to know what might fit. Will replace the drive and keep on driving. Thanks again.
