automatic shift lever

I have a 1955 champion and I am trying to remove the automatic shift lever from the column. The steering wheel is already off and I see that the shift lever seems to be connected to the column by a pin which I, presumably, should be able to pound out. Problem is the pin doesn't budge.

So, is my presumption correct (that the pin needs to be removed) and if so, what is the trick?

Yes the pin needs to come out. You will have to make sure the drift punch you are using is the right size, too small and it will slip inside the pin, expanding it more and worsening the situation. Time and patients is a virtue.
