  • Champ timing during overhaul

    Guys-
Could someone here explain the sequence of events to correctly time a Champion 6 during re-assembly to ensure I get it correct?

Engine is completely torn down @ the machine shop.[xx(] I'm asking this early so I understand []
Yes, I have two truck manuals, yet would (still) like to hear from you all.
    Thanks in advance!

Having only done this once on a flathead I am far from an expert. But here is what I did (assuming rotating parts are installed):
    • Checked and gapped the points while the distributor is out of the car
    • Install timing gears ensuring the marks line up

    • Install the oil pump so the slot lines up as shown in the shop manual. Wish I had a picture of that.
    • Install the distributor (it should only go in one way)

All in all it was far easier to time correctly than a modern OHC V6. No chain/belt and only two shafts at a time to worry about. Most of this was covered pretty well in the shop manual. I found the diagrams in the parts books were also useful to clarify what goes where.
