question on hawk and commander frame

  • question on hawk and commander frame

    hi. im trying to find out if the frame for a 64 commander 6 cyl 4 door is the same as a 58 packard hawk. also what would be the frame gauge on the 64?. is it too light because it is a 6 cyl?. thanks for any help. email shiftknob@verizon.net

    No, different WB. Should be 13ga or about .083" Depends on if you live in Michigan or Arazona.

      Those frames are in no way interchangable. The '64 Y body has a 113" wheelbase, the '58K body has a 120.5" wheelbase. All domestic 6 and V8 4 door frames were 11 guage, as were all JT And JTS powered cars. The 6 cyl. 2 door (F body) is the only one to get the 14 guage frame while the V8 2 door (F body) got the 13 guage frame. As far as I can remember, all '53 to '64 K body frames should interchange. The only real difference is that the '57 and earlier frames had a different crossmember to support the 2 piece drive shaft. '58 and newer had the one piece driveshaft.

            Also the rear springs changed in 1958 at the same time that the one piece driveshaft was introduced. So any 58-up Hawk frame should work OK. An earlier frame would require that the later spring mounts be transferred over and the center driveshaft support be cut out.
