1961 hawk front grills

  • 1961 hawk front grills

    I am trying to send my chrome out and was trying to the last of it, the side grills. The nuts on them are suoer rusted a socket will not fit, my question is there a method in removing these studs so I can get on with my project? I know someone out there has faced this before.

    The side panels are held on with a sheet metal nut and a funky bell mouthed washer going onto a stud. The nuts are probably rusted through.
    Maybe a metric 6 point socket and a nut driver, or a hand impact will get them loose enough to take off with some Vice-Grips.
    The fasteners for the small side grilles should be a bolt with a serrated lock washer. Those castings are very susceptible to corrosion, and most of the time the bolts will break if you crank on them. A good soaking in Kroil, some heat, and a socket in an impact driver is the best way to get them loose.
    (I don't even want to think about your upcoming chrome bill[:0])

      Yes I will be indeephock, I have a chrome guy that is very reasonable, the studebaker doesen't have as much chrome as the other cars I have worked on, try chroming a 1960 t-bird, now that's a chrome bill.I can't get the impact driver up in there so I am going to sears and getthat socket that bob V advertized on TV it has these tiny fibers in it and one size fits all...mightwork

        I don't know how much room you have, but if the nut is accessible, those lightbulb shaped nut busters work pretty good. They're the thing that have a bolt that when tightened, forces a little chisel like doo-hicky against the nut and spreads or splits it.

          As Jeff says, these are stamped sheet metal nuts, John. I doubt your nut-buster would split them. More likely it would damage the stud that the nuts fit on.

              Hmmm, my car has regular nuts, someone must have changed them before the car found me. When I removed them I was really afraid of busting the pot metal. And no, a nut buster wouldn't work at all.
