Are the dimensions anywhere close enough to allow a '61 and later Saginaw steering gear to be used on a '51 without chopping things to pieces? Thanks!

In October 1998 TW Dave Barnett wrote a very thorough article on installing the later recirculating ball type Saginaw box in a '55 coupe. This unit will require an adapter plate to be used in a '51 car, and the column and steering wheel won't look 'right'.
During part of the 1951 and 1952 model years Studebaker did change to a ball and roller bearing Saginaw steering box. That unit is a direct replacement for the Ross.
You're probably trying to get easier steering? Changing to a Saginaw unit should help quite a bit, but also make sure the rest of the steering/suspension is in good condition. Be especially aware of the Torrington bearings in the steering knuckles. These support all the weight of the front part of the car. They tend to get hammered flat and quit rotating, requiring an increase in steering effort.
