Those lights have a dark filter on them so the numerals glow, rather than illuminating the whole gage. I suspect, in addition to the filter being dirty, the paint on the numerals has deteriorated and is no longer reflecting the light it receives.

There was an earlier topic about the type of paint used on the gages but I don't recall.

The 50 and 51 dash lights used a bulb witha blue cover in the socket to irradiate the luminecent nunmerals. Unfortunatley, the numbers were never bright even when new,but as the numerals paint aged and the blue lens clouds, they hardly work at all. I had this problem on my 50 Champ. The numerals were restored (painted) by a previous owner-don't know who sells the luminous paint now. Then I replaced the bulbs with six volt Krypton flashlight bulbs. Now they really GLOW !!! The bulbs do get hot but haven't melted anything yet-two years of use.
I did have to silver solder a boss on the bulb bases to lock into the receptable.
To test-when dark, shine a high intensity light on the numerals for a few second, turn off the light and the numerals should glow if any life left in the luminous paint.

Keith, like's been said here - if those little blue filters are gone or dirty, your gages won't show up hardly at all.

Gary Ash may be able to provide some insight as he faced the same problem on his M-5 pickup. I think that he ended up redoing the numerals for all the gauges. Board to Gary, do you read us?

We found the paint at a hobby shop but don't remember the brand name. It is a eluminous paint.

I have wondered, and maybe someone here can advise, if you can remove the filters, install shields so the bulbs don't illuminate your feet and wire in a rheostat like the later cars.
