'50 Champion Engine/Tranny Pull

  • '50 Champion Engine/Tranny Pull

    My '50 Champion six will no longer shift into reverse. It feels like the synchro gear has split. If I have to pull the transmission, it is a good time to pull the engine for a thorough cleaning, gasket replacement, and painting. As this is my first go at this on a Studebaker, are there any "Gotcha's" that I need to be aware of?

    If you've done it on something other than a Studebaker, it's pretty much the same. Make sure everthing's disconnected. When it goes back, make sure everthing's connected. If you break anything, it will need fixed. Don't track grease and oil in to the kitchen.

      Actually it's not that difficult to drop the tranny alone if you don't mind working on your back under the car. But if you pull the engine, you'll be under there anyway. Years ago I swapped Lark trannys behind a 6 cylinder. If memory serves me correct, I think I had one out and the other installed in probably an hour. The tranny's actually rather light in weight and I did all this in the gravel driveway.

        I'm not sure I follow. That trans had synchros on 2nd and 3rd. I don't see how a worn or broken synchro would effect reverse. Are you sure it's just not a linkage problem (or trans mount problem creating a linkage problem)?

          Describe for us please what happens when you try to put it in reverse. Does the shift lever move normally? Is there any noise? Will the car roll backwards? Did this start all of a sudden, without warning? It just might be an overdrive problem.

              You folks are the reason I check this forum everyday!!

              I didn't know reverse did not have a synchro.

              The shift lever moves fine to all gears except reverse. It will move toward reverse but stops short of engaging. If I put pressure on the shift lever, there is some low level grinding.

              The car will roll backwards with no problems.

              The problem started all of a sudden, but it would be hard to declare that relevant as I have driven the car less than 20 miles, and used reverse less than 20 times since I have owned it.

              I am not sure that it isn't a linkage problem, but I haven't been able to see any obvious binding, etc. Before I do any pulling, I plan to disconnect the linkage and see if I can shift it at the levers on the transmission.

              I certainly appreciate all of the input, and hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas.

                I continue to be amazed at being able to communicate with such genius!! I checked the transmission mounts and they were like grease coated accordion bellows. Put a jack under the tranny and raised it about 1/2 inch, and the old gal goes backward like the Champion that she is.

                I am sure the motor mounts are the same, so will probably pull the engine and transmission anyway, but it is good to know that I don't seem to have gear problems.
