    I NEED A PARKING PAUL FOR A 55 SPEEDSTER V8. THE PART NO IS 529840 SO FAR I'VE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND ONE THAT HAS A COMPLET TOOTH, OR ONE THAT WOULDN'T BREAK THE BANK.

    ANY LEADS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED

    Hmmm, I thought I was going to find out something about parking a Studebaker named Paul. [] What you are actually looking for is a pawl.

      I don't know what your experience is with the parking feature of the DG transmission. In my case, I purchased a car with a newly rebuilt DG250M and the seller said to me "Never put it in park, especially on a hill". Of course, either CRS or curiosity got the better of me and I did once and not really a hill, but my slightly inclined driveway. That was the last and only time, as you couldn't move the lever to pull it OUT of Park. One abrupt yank, finally did it and I thought I was going to bend the linkage, but there was a snapping sound.
      Months later, when I pulled the pan to clean the filter, I found the top 1/8" of either the parking pawl or gear it meshed with. It was very neatly broken off and no other problems ever ocurred, but I've never used the Park detent again.
      I believe I've heard other mention that the feature doesn't really work as well as they thought it would. The system certainly doesn't have the same internal geometry as a newer type trans.
      If you can do without it, I'd suggest you leave it alone.

        Studebaker International sells the pawl. The secret to not breaking it is to use a functional parking brake. Do not put the entire weight of an inclined car on the park pawl.

            Try Tom Karkowitz (sp) in South Bend, He was "parting out" a bunch of transmissions when I was there a couple months ago. He was saving the internal parts and scrapping the cases.

              This happened to me in my '53 Commander- fairly steep driveway. I finally gave up and put my truck behind the car and gently pushed while my wife pulled it out of "Park".

                I also broke the parking pawl off my 1955 250G. 5 years ago, the part seemed hard to find - Jags use the same transmission.

                I used the parking brake for a while, instead of Park. Then, one day, my car almost went for a swim in a motel pool. The brakes cooled off, it rolled backwards, and the car parallel parked itself right beside a pool. Unfortunately, I got a few scrapes out of the incident.

                All fixed up now, and I got the transmission fixed right after that scare.

                  Isn't there an adjustment for the parking pawl? My Speedster also rolls in park, and has since I bought it, so I don't know if it's actually broken (probably is) or just out of adjustment. I thought I ran across an adjustment procedure in the shop manual.
